What is a “Teaching Nursing Home”?
The first teaching nursing homes were established in the USA around 1982 in order to improve the quality of nursing home care and the clinical training of nurses by linking research and nurse training with nursing homes. The concept of a teaching nursing home was formally introduced to Norway in 1996 by a National Program for Geriatrics. As a result of this program there were started several Teaching Nursing Home Projects in the largest cities of Norway.
After a thorough evaluation, the teaching nursing homes were established permanently in 2004 by the initiative of Directorate for Health and Social Affairs. They are financed by the Directorate for Health and Social Affairs, the regional municipality which they belong to and the nursing homes themselves.
From being a project the teaching nursing homes have developed into centres for clinical research and development within the fields of care of elderly and geriatrics. Our main goal is to increase quality of life amongst patients in nursing homes. The convinction is that improved care and treatment of patients in nursing homes is best achieved through increasing the skills and competence of our staff, and contributing to research and development in the field in close relation to hospitals, universities and home based care.
Improving our nursing homes
The teaching nursing homes contribute to improved quality of care and treatment by:
- Improving and securing the quality of care and treatment in nursing homes
- contributing to a higher level of competency in geriatrics
- raising the prestige of working in nursing homes
- increasing the recruitment of skilled personnel to nursing homes
- establishing an environment for research and development in nursing homes
- developing a well-functioning learning environment for students and health personnel
Where in Norway?
The Teaching Nursing Home Projects were started in 1999 in the cities of Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø. In addition, there was chosen one nursing home in Karasjok, in the county of Finnmark. The purpose of establishing a teaching nursing home there was to secure a special focus on the health aspects of the Lapp population of Norway. In 2001 there has been introduced one more Teaching Nursing Home Project outside the city of Kristiansand. In 2005 it also became a permanent teaching nursing home.
There are six main nursing homes in Norway and one teaching nursing home in every county. The six function as head offices for the teaching nursing homes - “satellites” - within their regions.
Popularity of the phenomenon
An important task for the teaching nursing homes has been to inform other nursing homes and the rest of society about our visions, achievements and results. This is achieved by arranging training courses and seminars, publishing results in relevant media, and by being visible and reachable for our target groups.
